MLK and One Child’s Perspective

A little girl in my class last year told me that she looked up to no one more than MLK because her best friend was a different race than her.  And she had heard that back in history they would not have been able to be friends, to go to the same school, or to be in each others lives in the way they were today.  She wrote an entire paper about how much this meant to her.  About how her parents were different races, and how they faced people who didn’t like their choice to be together… and how much MLK inspired her cause she truly loved her life.  I’ve never forgotten how simply she stated all this, and yet how grateful she was.  She truly was living the dream.

I would like so much a relationship that is a partnership not a relationship.  To be on equal footing where you each have different skills and allow each other to benefit from your strengths and weaknesses and then help fill in the gaps for each other. Too often I’ve been left waiting, or trying to accept that you are the alpha male and I am your woman, when i want to hold equal cards too.  Sometimes I look at other people’s relationships family, friends, and even people I meet at school and I wonder if it is possible to have a partnerships, to be equals or if I’m wanting a dream.
